Manufacturer of watches, manufacturer of oil lamps!
Hitchcock's kerosene lamps were an amazing technology before the advent of electricity.
but how?
Earlier lamps consisted of an oil tank, a brass lamp head through which a wick was inserted, and a bubble (used as a fume hood). The oil burners was equipped with clamping teeth that were used to move the wick up or down to adjust the height of the flame.
The problems with traditional kerosene lamps were that the flame was unstable and the lamp chimney and adjacent walls were covered in unpleasant soot.
Using his watchmaking background and a bit of mechanical ingenuity, Mr. Hitchcock addressed these issues.
